MARCH 2007 – NEWS LETTER
Trophy Evening and Auction (Tackle Required!!)
The presentation evening this year is on Friday 13th April at the Recreational Trust in Newton Abbot, 7.30pm. Please can all members who received a Perpetual Cup/Trophy, return these asap to Max Palmer at the Tackle Trader, as they need to be issued to the 2006 season winners! It would be great to see as many members as possible; there will be a bar and free buffet as normal.
As many of you will recall we had a tackle auction at last years presentation evening, the proceeds of which, approx £1,500, have been ring-fenced for the junior section. As the event was such a success we have decided to do it again, however we have no gear to auction! We are therefore asking for members to look through their own gear and see if there is a rod, reel, net, holdall or similar (coarse, sea or game) that was bought on impulse or you never use. Anglers are the worst for buying gear that they don’t really need and many of us have sheds, garages or back bedrooms full of such. If you can help with a piece of quality gear (i.e. not fit for the skip) please drop it into the Tackle Trader, Max has kindly agreed to store and sort this gear with the help of Gary Webber. Hopefully it should be a good evening with a chance to meet fellow members and pick up an auction bargain with all proceeds again going to the junior section. New members especially welcome!
- Not yet renewed your Full Membership?
The new season commenced on 1st January and renewals are still being accepted.
Send your card to the new Torquay PO Box address; (Mick Lee, PO Box 462, Torquay, TQ1 9BR). Please ensure you enclose the correct fee (£60 Full Senior, £30 Concession & £15 Junior) and a cheque made payable to NAFA. Please also ensure you enclose a S.A.E. Do not send renewals by recorded delivery as this will slow up the process significantly.
ALSO - Don’t forget to renew your EA Licences!! These expire on 31st March and you are unable to fish any of the NAFA waters without being in possession of an EA Licence. These can be obtained from most Post Offices, the EA Web site, By phone from the EA, or better still to set up a standing order or direct debit with the EA, that way you will never forget to renew and your licence will be sent direct to your home every year!

Wheel Pond – approx 100lb of small carp proposed for Autumn 2007.
PLEASE NOTE – Fish can only be introduced or moved between NAFA waters with authority from the EA and the NAFA Committee. Breaches of this rule will be severely dealt with and may lead to prosecution.
· Work parties
The work parties will continue throughout 2007 and we would be grateful for your support and attendance through the forthcoming season. For details of the work parties, please will you look out in the local press, the NAFA web site, posters and notices around the ponds and you can always contact a bailiff to offer your assistance, which is always greatly appreciated.
· Toilet Accommodation
We have now provided portable toilets at Rackerhayes and Spring Ponds. The toilets have been kindly Sponsored by the Environment Agency for a period of three months. They are emptied, cleaned and the consumables replenished on a weekly basis. We are keeping them locked, however, access is available by using the Association key (the one that opens all gates to our waters). The toilets are provided on a trial basis and dependant upon how they are treated by the membership, we hope to continue to hire these or possibly even purchase them. Please will you all look after these toilets and keep them in a condition that you would like to find them!
7th March 2007
New toilet provision at Rackerhayes and Spring Ponds - We are pleased to advise that new portable disabled toilets have been provided in the car parking areas of the above ponds. The Environment Agency have kindly sponsored these facilities for a three month period, and if the trial is proved successful, NAFA will take over the funding of these on a permanent basis. They will be cleaned, consumables replenished and wc's emptied on a weekly basis. Please can you keep these toilets in good order for the benefit of all at the Association.
Catch reports - A few good perch are starting to show at Key and Bradley Ponds. Rackehayes has extremely high water levels at the moment, so be carefull when fishing, the banks are very slippery and some swims are completely covered, which could cause snagging of lines and lost fish. Even with the water up, a few nice carp are coming out from Dores and Island ponds. Tench are showing from First and Linhay ponds, with Tenchfishers member, Adam Bojar, taking 5 tench to 5.10 in a session earlier this week. Wapperwell is fishing really well, but only if you can find the tightly shoaled up F1's recently stocked. Spring Ponds are fishing very well, it's worth a trip to the top pond, using a single grain of corn hook bait, with no free offerings or groundbait, hold onto you rod, as the bites are confident and savage when using this method and some of the carp are in double figures.
EA LICENCE REMINDER - Your current EA licence will expire at the end of this month. Please make sure that you are in posession of a valid EA Licence before you fish, as checks will be undertaken by both the EA and NAFA Officials. EA licences can be obtained from most Post Offices, the EA web site, by phone via the EA, or the best way, is to set up a standing order with your bank/EA, this means you will never forget to renew your licence, and your new licence wiil be sent to you by post, before the start of the season.

Island Pond - GOOD NEWS - The water quality at Island pond has significantly improved and therefore the Committee last night have decided to open the Pond from 09:00 on Friday 29th September 2006. However, there still remains a significant weed problem in the backwaters of the pond, and for the safety of the fish (Anglers fishing into the weed, fish being hooked and lost in the weed), the Committee will be monitoring the situation and may close this area of the pond if it is considered that there is a detrimental effect to the fish.
18th September 2006
Island Pond - As well as the front waters, Pegs 1,2, 3 & 4 have been opened up in the backwaters, other swims remain closed.

3rd September 2006 - Island Pond - Good News
We are pleased to announce that, with immediate effect, the front waters of Island Pond are open. The Ph levels have reduced sufficiently over the past week to allow this. Unfortunately, the Ph level is still high in the back waters, and therefore will remain closed until further notice. Therefore, the back waters are taped off, so please keep away from this area.
In order to help the pond's full recovery, please bait up sparingly.
We would like to thank the membership for their patience during the unavoidable closure.
21st August 2006 - News Update
Island Pond closure - The recent rains have helped the Oxygen levels situation at the pond, but the Ph levels are still high. Therfore this pond will still remain closed.
Carp Match 26th-27th August - Due to the uncertainty of when Island pond will be opened, we have decided to cancel this event. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
2nd August 2006 - News Update
Island Pond closure - Island Pond still looks like pea soup and therefore remains closed. We are taking regular Disolved Oxygen and Ph samples to monitor the water quality. Please refer to these pages for an update, as soon as the pond opens, it will be on here first.
NAFA/Environment Agency - Open Day - just a reminder that this event will be taking place this Saturday (for details see news item for 25th July below), even if Island Pond still remains closed, the event will go ahead and we will be using other ponds for the "Buddy Angler" system.
All-night Match Final - This was held on Bradley and Key ponds last Saturday. With Phil Coles having first choice of peg, he opted for peg 12 at Bradley. results as follows;
1st - Phil Coles - Bradley Pond - Peg 12 - 15k 500g
2nd - Adam Bojar - Key Pond - Peg 19 - 11kg 620g
3rd - Dave Sugdon - Bradley Pond - Peg 8 - 11kg 480g
Phil (Mr Bradley Pond) did extremely well with the bream and a few tench, Phil also lost a couple of carp too. Dave would have pipped Adam to second place, but he lost an eel in extremely strange but amusing circumstances!! I'll let him explain!
25th July 2006 - NEWS UPDATE
Island Pond closure - Island pond is now closed due to an algea bloom, which has resulted in a reduction in disolved oxygen levels within this pond. We have a pump working at nights and hopefuly heavy rain forcast this weekend may assist. No other ponds on the Rackerhayes complex are currently affected. Please refer to this website, contact local tackle outlets ans local press for for further updates.

Exception to this will be at the discretion of the Committee." With this in mind, you may wish to attend the work party on Monday 4th August at wheel pond, where we will be preparing the pond for the open day.
All-night Match Final – Due next Saturday 29th July on Bradley and Key ponds. Note; You will only be able to fish this match if you have previously fished the previous all-nighters. With Bradley pulling out huge weights of bream throughout the day, I can guess that all will want to fish there, especially Phil Coles!!
Junior Sunrise Entertainment Evening series matches - These started last Thurday night on Wheel Pond. There are another 7 matches to go, all on Thursday nights at wheel Pond.
5th June 2006
The juniors are showing the adults how to catch carp from Island Pond, over the weekend 1 junior had a 28lb + Common Carp from the backwaters and The Wheel Pond Bailliff's son, Dean Bradford, equaled the Junior record with a magnificent 32lb 12oz Mirror Carp from the Cattle Drink swim (peg1).

15 November 2003 Netting and Stocking
Approximately 6000 small silver fish have today been moved from the Wapperwell Pond onto the Rackerhayes Complex. Due to the high stocking levels in Wapperwell and the difficulty in getting through to the larger crucians and tench it was decided that this was the best course of action. Hopefully with fewer fish in the water the remaining stock will increase in size and improve the water further.

We are now able to confirm that the recent stocking of carp into Weedy has been very successful. Over the last couple of weeks numerous good bags of the small carp have been reported; in the recent all-night match Dave Brailey picked the water and came second overall with in excess of 12 kilos. The water seems to be very popular with the Junior section of the club, Mike Wallace and James Head had over 120 fish in 3 hours on a recent Sunday afternoon session.
15 March 2003
On Saturday 15th March in excess of 2000 mirror and common carp were stocked into Weedy Pond, as part of the ongoing development of this water. These fish are of a fast growing strain and average 5 inches in length. The water will be closed for a couple of weeks to allow the new stock to become acclimatized and to enabled a feeding program to be started. Bailiff of the water, Gary Saxton, said on delivery of the fish " I am pleased that these fish have arrived at last, it has made all of the hard work on the water over the last couple of years seem worth while, with the other works that have been carried out recently in landscaping the water I know that Weedy will become increasingly popular with the membership".
At the same time as the delivery of the carp to Weedy, a long overdue order for 1500+ skimmers was stocked into Bradley.
23 December 2002
WBB Minerals (our Rackerhayes landlords) and Tesco Ltd. have today announced details of a proposed planning application that will result in the re-development of the Tesco site at Newton Abbot. This development will involve the existing car park and First Pond on the Rackerhayes site being acquired by Tesco. As compensation for the loss of the car park and First Pond the application will include the creation of new facilities for the Association including car parks, stock ponds and a stocked 100 peg match water.
The Committee of the Association has been fully consulted during the initial stages of the planning process and believes that the proposed development will benefit the membership of the Association,

Angling Open Day - Saturday 5th August - put this in your diary NAFA will be holding another Angling Open Day in conjunction with the Environment Agency, at the Rackerhayes Complex. This will be the 6th Year we have held such an event. Please advise your friends and family to come along and visit our waters and have a go at fishing with a qualified NFA Registered Angling Coach. You don't need to have any experience of fishing, it's free, and all who attend should have a good chance of catching a fish.
16th July 2006
Today saw the Vernon Johnson memorial match being fished on Bradley. Beautiful weather made for a very enjoyable match, however only Phil Coles really found the fish with a final weight of 24kg 90grms!, made up of three good size tench, a stack of skimmers to 1 kilo and a couple of eels.
13th July 2006
All Night Match - Last Saturday saw the second in the series of the all night matches, with NAFA Secretary and Tenchfishers Member, Adam Bojar taking first place with a bag of 3 tench and 3 bream for 14kg from Linhay. Hot on his tail was NAFA Work party Officer, Phil Coles, with 4 superb tench from Dores, for 12k 600g. In third place was Dave Sugden with 10k 800g consisting of 12 tench from First pond. Dave also lost several fish throughout the night.
Bradley Pond Closure - NAFA will be closing Bradley Pond on Sunday 16th July to hold a Vernon Johnson Memorial Match. This match is not in the rulebooks, so we would appollogies in advance for any inconvenience caused. NAFA Officials were given permission to fish a local small nature reserve and to remove some tench from this water. I am pleased to advise that approx 30 tench of between 6oz to 2lb were removed and stocked into Bradley Pond at no cost to NAFA.
Building Works at Rackerhayes - Visitors to Rackerhayes will notice some portal cabins and a fenced compound within the car park. We are letting this part of the compound to contractors who are currently refurbishing the existing Tesco store. The letting is for a 17-week period from 30th June. I know this may cause some inconvenience to our members, however the Committee decided to proceed with the letting in order to obtain some valuable income.
Work Party - The work parties are still continuing throughout the season, mainly on Monday nights, however, some weekend work parties are arranged. If you have not yet attended a work party, I would suggest you hurry up and book yourself onto one soon, as your 2007 Full Membership will not be available if you have not attended at least one work Party or similar event (see Rule 15). Details of the work parties have been sent to all full Members in February, been published in the press and are also posted around the ponds - So there's no Excuse!!
There have been very few entries for the fish of the month competition so far this season. We know there have been several excellent fish caught, so why not report them? As well as the chance of winning a £10 cheque each month, your entry will automatically qualify you for consideration of winning an end of season trophy.
